Osteopathy is a philosophy of health care that acknowledges that the body can heal itself. When this health maintenance system is compromised, symptoms or disease can develop. Using a very gentle hands-on approach we can address many pediatric concerns in infants such as difficulty breast feeding, colic, plagiocephaly, torticollis, and chronic ear infections. In older children we can address chronic otitus media, concussion, immunization reactions, gait disturbances, neurologic concerns, muskuloskelatal injuries and falls as well as congential concerns such as ADD and autism. We work with adults by looking at the inherent motion of the muskuloskeletal system adddressing low back pain and other injuries.
Osteopathic training in addition to medical school includes rigorous study in anatomy, physiology and how this can effect disease. In 1892 Dr. Andrew Taylor Still (a civil war surgeon) founded the American school of Osteopathy in an attempt to change a medical system that only looked at disease and medication management. Osteopaths are taught that the human body is capable of healing itself, and are taught to ask why the disease has developed not to just treat symtoms. In many cases disease comes from a disruption in blood flow, lymphatic drainage, neurologic compression, a lifestyle that does not promote heaing, or a change in the physiology that can be addressed through a hands on approach to alternative medicine
Similar in name to the Rudolph Steiner school of thought, A Biodynamic Osteopath looks at the body as a whole unit, in relationship to the natural world it lives in. This allows a Biodynamic Osteopath to address the emotional, spiritual and physical body.
